If you assembled a specification for the ideal wardrobe fibre from first principles, you would ask for something that insulates when cold and cools when warm, that manages moisture without feeling damp, that resists odour for days, that returns to shape after stretching, that resists fire, and that biodegrades at end of life.
That specification describes merino wool almost exactly. It has been available for several centuries. Most people still associate it with itchy jumpers received as gifts, which is one of the more expensive branding failures in the history of textiles.
The Micron Question Settles the Itch Argument
Wool's reputation for scratchiness is a direct function of fibre diameter, and the physics is simple. A thick fibre is stiff. Pressed against skin, it does not bend, it indents, and the nerve endings that detect that indentation report it as prickle.
Ordinary wool runs between twenty-five and forty microns. That is coarse enough to prickle almost everyone. Merino runs between fifteen and twenty-four. Below about nineteen microns, the fibre bends on contact rather than pressing in, and the sensation disappears entirely for the large majority of wearers.
Superfine merino, at fifteen to seventeen microns, is finer than a good deal of commercial cashmere. It is worth sitting with that comparison, since cashmere is priced as a luxury on the basis of fineness and merino is not.
The relevant question when buying merino is therefore never whether it is merino. It is what micron count. A brand that publishes the figure is telling you the most important thing about the garment. A brand that does not is usually working at the coarse end.
How the Temperature Regulation Actually Works
Merino is described as temperature regulating so often that the mechanism has been lost. It is worth stating plainly because it explains the limits as well as the benefits.
Wool fibres have a crimped, three dimensional structure that traps air between them. Trapped air is an insulator, which handles the cold side. The warm side works differently: wool absorbs moisture vapour into the fibre core, up to roughly a third of its own weight, without feeling wet to the touch. That absorbed moisture then evaporates from the fibre surface, and evaporation removes heat.
So the fibre buffers. It slows the rate at which your microclimate changes in either direction, which is why merino feels comfortable across a far wider band of conditions than cotton or synthetic. It is not magic and it is not unlimited. It is a moisture buffer with good insulation, and that combination is unusually useful.
The Odour Property Is the Underrated One
Body odour is not produced by sweat. It is produced by bacteria metabolising sweat on a wet surface. Cotton holds moisture at the surface, which is an excellent environment for that process. Merino draws moisture into the fibre core, which is not.
The practical consequence is that merino garments can be worn for several consecutive days without developing odour, a claim that sounds like exaggeration until it is tested. Travellers worked this out decades ago.
The second order effect matters more than the first. Laundering is the primary cause of garment death. Agitation abrades fibre, heat sets stains, and detergent strips finish. A garment that needs washing a third as often survives roughly three times as long, which turns an odour property into a durability property and, by extension, into the sustainability argument we set out in our piece on sustainability.
Where Merino Falls Short
Abrasion resistance is the genuine weakness. Merino, particularly at fine micron counts, is less durable against friction than cotton or synthetics. Elbows and cuffs go first. This is why lightweight merino base layers are often blended with a small percentage of nylon, which is a reasonable compromise rather than a cheapening.
Pilling occurs early on most merino knits as short fibres migrate to the surface. It generally stabilises after the first few washes if the yarn quality is decent. If it continues indefinitely, the fibre was short and the garment was not what it claimed.
Cost is real. Fine micron merino from a well run supply chain is expensive per kilo, and there is no version of this that is inexpensive without being coarse.
And care matters more than for cotton. Cool water, wool detergent, dry flat. Machine drying merino at heat will felt the fibre permanently, which is one wash cycle away from ruining an expensive garment.
Where to Use It
Merino is the correct answer for travel, for anything worn under a jacket for long hours, for changeable weather, and for any circumstance where laundry access is limited. It is at its best in the layer next to the skin, which is where its moisture behaviour has something to work with.
It is not the correct answer for a garment that will take heavy abrasion, or for anyone who launders on hot cycles and dries by machine and has no intention of changing.
