Ask most people to describe a t-shirt and you will get adjectives. Soft, nice, good quality. Ask a knitter and you will get a number, in grams per square metre, and from that number they can tell you almost everything about how the garment will behave.
Weight, usually written as gsm, measures the mass of one square metre of the fabric. It is not a quality score. It is a behavioural specification, and it controls more of the wearing experience than fibre content does.
What Weight Controls
Drape is the first and most visible. Lightweight fabric follows the body, revealing whatever is underneath it and moving with every gesture. Heavyweight fabric imposes its own shape, hanging in a column and creating space between cloth and body. Neither is superior. A garment intended to be fluid and one intended to be architectural are asking for opposite things.
Opacity follows weight closely, though not perfectly, since construction density modifies it. A one hundred forty gram jersey in white will be semi transparent regardless of fibre quality. A two hundred forty gram jersey will not.
Thermal behaviour is more nuanced than most people expect. Heavier fabric insulates more, but weave openness matters as much as mass. A heavyweight open knit can breathe better than a lightweight tightly woven synthetic, which is why linen at a substantial weight remains comfortable in heat, a point we explore in our piece on linen.
Durability correlates with weight most reliably of all. More material at the surface means abrasion takes longer to reach through. Heavier fabric resists stretching at stress points and holds a hem without curling. In practice, a two hundred eighty gram shirt with the same fibre and construction as a one hundred sixty gram shirt will outlast it by years.
The Ranges, Concretely
For cotton jersey, the useful bands are these. Under one hundred fifty grams is layering weight: light, cool, prone to clinging, and short lived. It has legitimate uses under jackets and in genuine heat, but it should be bought understanding that it is a consumable.
One hundred eighty to two hundred twenty is the everyday band. It is where most well made t-shirts sit, because it balances softness against structure and works across seasons without being ideal in either extreme.
Two hundred forty to three hundred is heavyweight. The garment stands away from the body, the collar holds, the hem hangs straight, and the shirt reads as deliberate rather than default. This is the range where a t-shirt stops being underwear with a logo and becomes a garment in its own right.
Above three hundred twenty, you are in territory that behaves like light outerwear. Excellent for certain silhouettes and genuinely uncomfortable in warm rooms.
Where Weight Misleads
The trap is treating gsm as a proxy for quality, and it is an easy trap because the correlation is real at the low end and breaks down at the high end.
Weight can be manufactured cheaply. Coarse, short staple cotton spun into thick, loosely twisted yarn produces a heavy fabric at low cost. It feels substantial in the hand and it pills within a month, because the surface is dense with exposed fibre ends. A heavyweight garment made from poor fibre is worse than a mid weight garment made from good fibre, on every axis except the initial impression.
So weight must be read alongside fibre. Long staple cotton, combed and compactly spun, at two hundred forty grams is an outstanding fabric. Carded short staple cotton at the same weight is a disappointment waiting to arrive. The number is necessary and it is not sufficient, a distinction we go into in Good Cotton, Great Cotton.
Weight Changes in Service
Fabric weight is measured after finishing, and finishing includes washing. This matters because unwashed fabric shrinks, and shrinkage concentrates mass into less area, which raises effective gsm.
A garment sold at one hundred ninety grams unwashed may finish at two hundred fifteen after its first laundering, along with a reduction in length and width that changes the fit. Makers who wash their fabric before cutting, which is more expensive and yields less, deliver a garment whose stated weight and stated size are both still true after you wash it. Makers who do not are quoting figures with a short expiry.
Ask which figure is being quoted. The answer separates houses that specify their cloth from houses that receive it.
How to Use This
Decide what you want the garment to do before deciding what to buy. Fluid and cool, or structured and durable. Then look for a published weight in that range, and a fibre specification alongside it.
If neither number is available, you are being asked to buy adjectives. Sometimes the adjectives are accurate. You simply have no way of knowing, and that uncertainty is a cost that should be priced into the decision.
