Linen is the oldest textile in continuous human use. Fragments of woven flax have been recovered from sites dated well beyond thirty thousand years, which means people were spinning it before they were farming. It has survived every technological change since, largely unaltered.
It has also acquired a reputation problem. Linen is filed under holiday clothing, and specifically under a certain crumpled register that many people decide is not for them. That decision is usually made on the basis of a badly made garment in a linen blend, which is a shame, because good linen is a genuinely remarkable material.
Why Linen Works in Heat
Linen comes from flax, a bast fibre taken from the stem of the plant rather than from a seed pod as cotton is. Stem fibres are structural, which means they evolved to be stiff, and that stiffness is the source of everything linen does well.
Stiff yarn produces cloth that does not drape onto the skin. It stands slightly away, holding a layer of air between fabric and body, and air movement through that gap is what actually cools a person. Cotton at the same weight clings once damp and stops moving air, which is why a cotton shirt in humidity becomes uncomfortable in a way linen does not.
Flax also conducts heat away from the body more readily than cotton, and absorbs up to a fifth of its weight in moisture before feeling wet. The three properties compound. There is no engineered fabric that outperforms linen in still, humid heat, which is a striking thing to be able to say about a material this old.
The Creasing Is Not a Defect
The reason linen creases is the reason it works. Flax fibres have almost no natural crimp and very low elasticity. Bend one and it stays bent. Wool, at the opposite extreme, is highly crimped and elastic, which is why wool sheds wrinkles overnight on a hanger.
You cannot have one without the other. Every technique for reducing linen creasing works by compromising the fibre. Blending with polyester adds elasticity and removes breathability. Resin wrinkle resistant finishes coat the fibre and reduce both absorbency and hand. Blending with cotton produces a fabric that creases less than linen and performs worse than either parent in heat.
The honest position is that linen creases and that this is the price of admission. The register it produces is relaxed rather than sloppy, provided the garment is well cut and the cloth is decent. A crumpled linen shirt that fits properly looks considered. The same shirt cut badly looks like laundry.
Improvement Over Time, Which Is Genuinely Unusual
Nearly every fabric begins its decline the moment it is finished. Cotton thins, wool pills, synthetics abrade and go shiny. Linen is the exception in a way that is measurable rather than sentimental.
Raw flax fibre is bound together by pectins, natural adhesives that make new linen stiff and slightly cool to the touch. Every wash removes a little more pectin, and the fibre bundles separate progressively into finer filaments. The cloth becomes softer, more fluid, and more absorbent, and it continues doing so for years.
Linen is also roughly thirty percent stronger than cotton and, unusually, stronger wet than dry, so it tolerates the laundering that softens it. This is the rare case where the thing that ages a garment is also the thing that improves it. An inherited linen sheet in a family that has kept it properly is not a compromise. It is the best version of that object that has ever existed.

Choosing It
Origin matters more than usual with flax. The best is grown in the coastal band running through northern France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, where the damp maritime climate suits retting, the controlled decomposition that releases fibre from stem. Belgian and French flax remain the reference standard, and Irish linen refers to weaving and finishing rather than to where the flax was grown.
Weight guides use. One hundred fifty grams and below is a shirting weight, light and semi transparent. Two hundred to two hundred fifty makes substantial shirts and light trousers. Three hundred and above suits jackets and heavier trousers, where the cloth's body becomes an advantage.
Look for pure linen rather than blends unless there is a specific reason. A linen and cotton blend at fifty-fifty gives you a fabric that creases nearly as much as linen and breathes considerably less, which is the worst of the available trades.
And check the yarn under light. Good linen has visible slub, irregular thicker sections along the yarn. Perfectly uniform linen has usually been over processed, and it has lost the surface character that is much of the reason to choose it in the first place.
